The Pilgrimage

History of the Trail: In the Footsteps of the Lotus Born

The Lotus-Born Trail is not a new creation, but the revival of an ancient spiritual artery. Its history is woven into the very foundation of Bhutan, tracing the sacred journey of the master who brought the light of Buddhism to the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

In the 8th century, the land that would become Bhutan was a realm where spiritual forces roamed freely. It was at this pivotal time that the great tantric master, Guru Padmasambhava, revered as Guru Rinpoche, the "Precious Master" was invited from India to subdue negative energies and spread the teachings of Vajrayana Buddhism.

His point of entry was through the southern gateway, the lush, subtropical plains of Gelephu. From there, his journey was not a mere traversal of land, but a continuous act of blessing, meditation, and subjugation of adversarial forces. He moved northwards, through the heartlands of central Bhutan, leaving an indelible spiritual imprint on the landscape.

The Sacred Route: From Gelephu to Kurje

The trail took Guru Rinpoche’s through the regions of Nabji Korphu , where he paused to teach and meditate, sanctifying these places as forever part of his sacred narrative. His journey culminated in Bumthang, at a site that would become one of Bhutan’s holiest Kurje Lhakhang.

Here, in a dramatic display of spiritual power, Guru Rinpoche meditated and subdued a local deity, leaving his body imprint permanently embedded in a rock. This event, which literally translates “Kurje” as “Body Imprint,” marked the profound conclusion of his mission, establishing a beacon of Buddhist faith that has drawn pilgrims for over a millennium.
